San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore Signs Extension

The San Francisco 49ers and running back Frank Gore have agreed to terms on a three-year extension, according to a league source.

Pro Football Talk reports the extension is worth $21 million, including $13.5 million guaranteed.

Gore is set to make $4.9 million this season and could earn $25.9 million over four years, according to PFT.

Fantasy Impact: Gore's new contract should have little-to-no impact on his fantasy value, if anything it improves his value because he's now happier with his contract situation. Gore had been frustrated with his contract situation early in training camp. Gore is ranked #27 on The Source's TOP 200.

NFL Lockout's Impact On The San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers: The Niners have a ton of talent, but no quarterback and a new head coach. The labor mess could mean Alex Smith stays in town and becomes Jim Harbaugh's quarterback. However, even though Smith is familiar with the Niners franchise, he's not familiar with Harbaugh's offense. Even with Smith at quarterback, the Niners will be better off than some teams simply because they play in a weak division (NFC West), the have a talent-rich roster and Harbaugh is a better coach than Mike Singletary.

2011 Fantasy Football Scouting Report: Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers

2010 Stats (11 gms)
2370 yds.
14 TDs
     10 INTs
2011 Projected
3110 yds.
18 TDs
     14 INTs

If new 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is serious about keeping Smith, this could be a very good thing for the quarterback. Smith has shown flashes of promise, but his inconsistency has made him a liability. The Niners have a wealth of talent with Frank Gore at running back, Vernon Davis at tight end and Michael Crabtree at wide receiver. San Francisco has also done a good job of building a solid offensive line and the Niners offense should make great strides under Harbaugh. This year could be Smith's last chance to prove he's a starting NFL quarterback. Of the lower tier quarterbacks, he's the one who might be worth a gamble in the late rounds on draft day.
